About the Journal of Korean Law

The Aim and Scope. The Journal of Korean Law, first published in 2001, is the first English law journal to be published by a Korean law school. It is the most prestigious journal of its kind, serving as a prime source of English articles concerning the Korean legal system.

The primary aim of the Journal of Korean Law is to introduce to foreign jurists distinct problems and developments currently at issue in the Korean legal system. Articles published by JKL primarily address recent developments under progress in the various legal fields of Korean domestic law, including but not limited to civil law, administrative law, commercial law, and constitutional law. Also, numerous articles undertake broad comparative studies of legal issues under development in Korea with those of other major legal systems.

However, this does not mean the scope of JKL is limited to problems concerning only the Korean legal system. JKL also publishes articles addressing problems arising in other societies of the Asia-Pacific region, including Japan, China, Vietnam, and Taiwan. JKL believes that its key role is to help legal experts of the world to better understand the legal problems facing the wider Asia-Pacific region and sees that through this project Korean law can be better understood by foreign jurists.

In the long run, JKL aims to expand its connection with jurists across the Asia-Pacific region, forming an academic network in which experts of Korean law can learn from and in time aid jurists of other societies in face of the common legal challenge of the region. JKL believes that the experiences and challenges undertaken by Korean jurists can help inform jurists of other societies to better solve present and anticipated problems they are currently facing.
